Anatomy of an Invitation Part One: The Gatefold

I just love designing stationery (which is a good thing, clearly!) and many years ago I was asked by a client to come up with something along the lines of a gatefold record sleeve...anyone else remember them? Back then, I was limited by a teensy time desk top guillotine, no creaser and titchy little sheets of A4 card (everyone has to start somewhere!). So I bent my brain around the challenge and - ta-daaah! - our Gatefold Invitation was born. The first one I ever designed and made - all by hand back then - was a dramatic flame red with black print:

There are lots of similar products available (often known as pocketfolds, envelopments etc...) but here at Dragonfly we insist on producing all our own stationery including the blank outers for our Gatefolds. So you won't find them anywhere else! The design has deliberately been kept simple to allow us as much versatility as possible - we can print on the Gatefold covers, the sleeves can be used either portrait or landscape style and there are practically unlimited options for decorating them! We've also had our gatefolds letterpressed and ventured into more unusual boards and papers. The large gatefold (closed size 145mm x 145mm) is always available in white and ivory pearl, and the small gatefold is available currenlty in white, ivory, silver and black pearl as well as both grey and brown kraft - a great recycled option. But I'm waffling! I want to tell you how they work and how versatile they are. And for me, the best way to do this is always by using pictures:

So this set above shows you how the gatefold can be used in a landscape orientation. the cover is decorated with lace, ribbon and Swarowski crystal as well as layered ivory and rose pink pearlised card. The gatefold itself has been printed so you can see the rooster on the inside pocket. This invitation contains four additional cards, including travel information, menu choices, somewhere to stay and a little card with information about gifts and children. We tucked the reply card and pre-addressed envelope behind the inserts and the invitation is packaged for you with a sheet of tissue inside it to the Swarowski crystal doesn't scratch the opposite page - we think of everything!

The Gatefold is a wonderfully heavy invitation. At some points on the most layered versions we do the invite has up to 13 layers of card. Word of warning - this will mean it has to go as a large letter ;) Not only is it hugely versatile and totally luxurious but it is a striking and effective way of conveying all the important details about your big day, and also for gathering the information you need, such as guests pre-selected menu choices. I'll leave you with this (yes, slightly toungue in cheek) little sign from the Liverpool Wedding Show last weekend - designed to tell you what you need to know about what makes our gatefolds so different..... XOXO Ling
