1920s Coral and Navy themed Invitations

I love a good theme, one with strong colours which we can carry on through all items in the stationery suite. My clients Sarah and Andrew were married in June in the beautiful Wirral venue Thornton Manor, former home of the eccentric businessman and philanthropist William Hesketh Lever. Lord Leverhulme is a story for another day, right now I simply want to share with you Sarah and Andrew's wedding invitations, their cool ideas and their great taste in stationery!

When I first met Sarah she knew she wanted a simple take on an art-deco design, her bridesmaids were in deep deep navy dresses with white beaded embroidery and her accent colour was going to be a deep coral. It was important that the menu was included in the invitation and we needed a way for guests to let Sarah and Andrew know what their choices were. Sarah also knew that she wanted to include details of local hotels, information about their guest list and an order of the day. I took Sarah through all her options, covering both different styles of invitation and different printing techniques. Sarah knew straightaway she wanted letterpressed invitations, and she chose our popular and versatile gatefold design. She was also keen for the invitations to have character and a certain quirky-ness. Typography was very important and we chose three typefaces we felt would reflect the theme. Here's a peek at the selection of cover designs I created for Sarah and Andrew, alongside the final, letterpressed cover which was layered and mounted against a sapphire board on the outside of the ivory pearl gatefold:

Inside the invitation, Sarah had chosen staggered inserts and you can clearly see in these pictures how the three typefaces combined to make a fresh and quirky look for these art deco styled invitations. The image on the right demonstrates how everything from menu, to menu choice selection on the reply slip and order of the day on the smallest insert, was incorporated.

 Once the replies were all returned and collated we were able to move on to the 'on the day stationery'. I had some strips of pattern printed at the same time as the covers and these letterpressed strips were turned into luggage tags witha length of navy ribbon to wrap around the napkins. A strip ofletterpressed pattern was also used at the top of the table names and menus which were doublesided and designed to be displayed in clipstands.  

 The full seating plan can be seen on the left - this clever idea was all down to Sarah and Andrew who love a day out at the races. Each table was designed as a race card where the form indicates their menu choices. this can be seen more clearly in these detail shots - the menu is given on the bottom left of the seatingplan with instructions for use on the right hand side.

We loved working on the stationery for this wedding. The contrast between the letterpressed covers on a matte white board and the digital print inside on the pearlised board was simply stunning and the 'day at the races' theme for the wedding breakfast was great fun. All the silks for the 'jockeys' (ok, guests) were created in matching colours and the end result was simply stunning.
